PostSubject: THE WARMING UP   Thu Feb 03, 2011 12:36 am

    We are
always advised not to drive the car directly otherwise we will face some
troubles later during our trip, so the car should be
heated for some minutes before leaving the park or the garage where it has been
parked. Here the situation is not very different as the warm up is the first
push that a teacher gives to learners to plunge into the lesson. It paves the
way to the presentation phase. It wets learner’s appetite and prepares them to
the new teaching points by recycling the prior knowledge which is related to
what is about to be presented ,but is
the warm up always related to the new teaching points?

    When the
warm up has a relationship with the new teaching points, it is called a lead in
because it leads to the presentation phase. It is also called knowledge as it
is what learners have already known. It is the prior knowledge that has to do
with the new teaching items. For
example, the past simple of regular verbs are recycled to present the past
simple of irregular verbs. The adjectives are recycled to deal with the
    comparatives.

The warm up can be presentation of the theme. That can be done via
presentation of some pictures or via lexical set.

    The warm
up does not always lead to the new teaching points, but it is always the
departure that prepares the learners either linguistically, psychologically or
    even physically, but how physically?

    When we do not need
to recycle any linguistic item, it is wise to let learners mingle or do some
physical movements why not funny physical movements such as show some words to
learners and make each learner whispers it to the next classmate ,and the last
learner writes it on the board. You can do this in a form of team work. This
operation is also a way to attract learners’ attention and prepares them to the
new lesson. We can simply ask learners to shake their heads, hands or bodies…
